Can the wireless portion of a wireless router be used to connect to a HotSpot?

I have a Linksys WRT54G, and would normally connect to the Internet using a cable modem. However, I now only have access to an open wireless HotSpot. Can the WRT54G connect to the HotSpot, or do I need some other device to replace the function of the cable modem? If so, what device?
