HELP! HELP! I HAVE A LILAC PROBLEM?

In my backyard I have a 10 foot white lilac bush. Just the top has leaves. I want to cut it down a third of its size but then it would just be sticks. What to do? I would have been trimming it every couple years but I just moved here in November.
