Is applecare worth it?

My 1 year complimentary warranty is almost up. I have a late 2008 unibody MacBook Pro. It's gonna cost about €300 or so to get applecare. Quite the pretty penny. How many out there bought applecare and regretted it because their computer never had a need for it, and how many out there regretted not buying it because their computer broke down the day after their warranty was up? I need help deciding what to do. I'm himming and hawing.
