Want to become a private tutor, but how?

I started a tutoring business out of my home years ago by volunteering to help a public school system with their after school tutoring program. With the success I had working for them, they started referring students to me and I then took my little start-up business home. Then I advertised in small newspapers and word of mouth plus my own small efforts allowed me to actually hire a couple of others who had the similar ambitions. That led to tutoring for GED's SAT exams, ACT's and the like and it kind of snoballed from there. With the proper student, the right attitude and the dedication and teaching technique — which has nothing at all to do with a GPA, you can build a nice little career and make several hundred dollars per week. I would also suggest reading some teaching manuals to learn how to teach people certain subjects. Let's face it, the kids you are working with will not have the same aptitide and abilities as you do in those subjects. This requires patience, tolerance, ability on your part, and being able to show success or the parents stop bringing the children over.
